Another key leader of a tech company recently joined the ranks at Apple. The LinkedIn bio page of former NVIDIA CUDA Libraries and Software Solutions machine learning program director Jonathan Cohen was recently updated to reflect his new employment, according to a report by Re/Code.
Speculation about Cohen’s new role at Apple heightened when the latter became vague about his new job title. Apple Insider echoes that Cohen listed under his new title at Apple “Software.” The tech news site also noted that Cohen could very well provide the expertise Apple wants also in developing its new autonomous vehicle prototype, considering his work at the Tesla-backed program involved research subjects like bioinformatics and machine learning. Endgadget also said that Cohen’s recent work at NVIDIA prior to his departure was a camera-based autopilot system for automobiles called Drive PX that can identify and react to specific vehicle types.
Chris Nicholson, co-founder of deep learning startup Skymind.io, told Re/Code about Apple’s bold hiring move, “This is a big hire for Apple. Nvidia’s GPUs are being used to power auto-pilot systems in cars, so the implications are pretty clear.”
