In 2014 the National Research Institute of Papua New Guinea appointed Dr Diane Kraal and Dr Craig Emerson (former Federal Minister with the Rudd and Gillard governments) to work on a petroleum and mining tax reform project, 'Analysis of Taxation Policies and Reforms Affecting Individuals and Businesses in PNG'. Tax reform in Papua New Guinea has the support of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The work continued in 2015 with a grant from the Government of Papua New Guinea regarding tax reform in the PNG mining sector, and the recommendations were included in the PNG Tax Review Committee's Final Report to Government. Current research concerns the impact of resource commodity prices on tax revenues.
