Rebekah Modrak is an artist and writer who creates internet-based critical interventions into consumer culture to critique brand appropriations and visual culture. In 2013, she founded Re Made Co. (remadeco.org), an artwork critiquing the appropriation of working class identities and the revitalization of traditional male roles. The artwork takes the form of an online "company," parodying existing company Best Made Co. In 2017, she created Rethink Shinola (rethinkshinola.com), an online artwork analyzing, critiquing and exposing a complex and patronizing agenda of marketing the White savior myth, Detroit, and authenticity. Modrak is a co-curator of #exstrange, a curatorial project featuring site-specific work by artists using eBay as a site for the exchange of ideas, objects and commerce by incorporating the structures of the online marketplace as elements in the work. She is the lead author of Reframing Photography (Routledge 2011), a book critically exploring photographic representation, ethics, re-enactments, mediated vision, and other issues within the image-based world.
