Dr Hywel Jones is an expert in engineering ceramics which can typically be found in body armour, replacement hip joints, bearings for space engines and oil & gas pumps etc. He is particularly interested in their use as body armour and as wear resistant parts.
He has founded a spin-out company, XeraCarb Ltd, to exploit MOD funded research on light-weight body armour.
Hywel also has an interest in precious metals and decorative alloys. He has invented a novel tarnish resistant silver alloy and a new mixed metal decoratiove alloy called Mikana and has formed Mikana Innovation Ltd to commercialise these alloys.
He also have a strong interest in e-waste and sustainability and in particular the attitude and knowledge (or lack of it) of consumers to electronics such as mobile phones and all the amazing materials that contain.
