British Prime Minister Andy Burnham will push for the UK to take a global leadership role in artificial intelligence on Tuesday as he makes his first major appearance on the international diplomatic stage at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Burnham is also expected to meet US President Donald Trump for the first time, seeking common ground on AI despite differences between their governments on other issues. The British leader said both countries recognize the technology’s economic potential while navigating concerns about its rapid development.
Burnham said policymakers should remain “clear-eyed about the huge benefits” of AI while acknowledging areas where safeguards may be necessary. He argued that Britain is uniquely positioned to help shape global AI cooperation because of its close relationship with the United States, improving ties with the European Union and established relations with China and India.
The prime minister hopes Britain’s upcoming G20 presidency, including plans to host the group’s meeting in Manchester next year, can provide a platform to showcase the UK’s AI ambitions. Burnham said Britain could serve as an “honest broker” in international discussions over artificial intelligence governance and development.
His meeting with Trump will also test Burnham’s approach to US-UK relations. Since becoming prime minister in July, Burnham has held at least two calls with Trump, describing the conversations as warm and cordial. He has said he is prepared to disagree with the US president when British interests require it while continuing to seek areas of cooperation.
Beyond AI, Burnham plans to use his UN visit to call for increased international support for Ukraine, particularly additional air-defense assistance.
He is also scheduled to attend a Middle East meeting alongside Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Burnham and Carney have developed a personal connection through their shared support for English Premier League club Everton, having recently attended a match together.
