Lula Meets Mamdani in New York as Elections Approach

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva met New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Monday, bringing together two prominent figures on the political left as Brazil and the United States approach major elections.

Lula, who traveled to New York for the United Nations General Assembly, received Mamdani at the residence of Brazil’s ambassador to the UN on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The meeting marked their first face-to-face talks.

Speaking briefly to reporters afterward, Lula said the discussion focused on challenges affecting people in both Brazil and the United States, particularly the rising cost of living. The two also discussed poverty and public policies aimed at supporting lower-income households.

Mamdani said Lula’s record of implementing social programs in Brazil had provided inspiration for his own approach to government. The New York mayor has made affordability a major focus, as residents face financial pressure from housing, groceries and other everyday expenses.

The meeting comes at a politically significant time for both countries. Lula is seeking a fourth non-consecutive term as Brazilian president, with the first round of Brazil’s presidential election scheduled for October 4. Reuters reported that polls show a close contest between Lula and right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

In the United States, Mamdani has emerged as a prominent Democratic figure ahead of November’s midterm elections, which will determine the composition of Congress. His political agenda has emphasized affordability and policies aimed at working-class New Yorkers.

Beyond the cost of living, Lula and Mamdani also discussed democracy, extremism and disinformation, according to accounts of the meeting. Lula invited Mamdani to visit Brazil, although no date was announced.

The meeting concluded with an exchange of soccer jerseys, adding an informal touch to their first official talks.
