U.S. President Donald Trump intensified pressure on Cuba during his United Nations General Assembly address on Tuesday, describing the Communist-run country as a “failed state” and predicting major political change on the island.
Trump said his administration was seeking a “fundamental change” in Cuba, arguing that its government was facing unprecedented pressure. He said the Cuban state was “failing like never before” and declared that “freedom will be coming to Cuba.”
The remarks prompted Cuba’s delegation to walk out of the UN General Assembly hall, underscoring growing tensions between Washington and Havana.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel later responded on X, saying Cuba would defend its sovereignty. He accused Trump of portraying the country as a threat to provide justification for Washington’s policies toward Havana.
The United States has maintained a trade embargo against Cuba for more than six decades. Under Trump, Washington has increased economic pressure on the Cuban government, including an oil blockade imposed earlier this year. Cuba has faced severe fuel shortages and widespread power outages, compounded by aging and deteriorating infrastructure.
Trump has previously characterized Cuba as a failed nation. In June, he said the United States had plans regarding Cuba and would “take care” of the situation.
Relations between Washington and Havana have remained deeply strained since Fidel Castro’s 1959 revolution transformed Cuba into a Communist state and aligned the country with the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
Trump’s latest comments come as his administration pursues a more confrontational policy toward governments in the region. In January, U.S. forces removed Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, according to the account provided in the source article.
Cuba policy also remains politically significant in Florida, where some Cuban-American groups have long advocated stronger U.S. pressure on Havana and supported efforts aimed at political change on the island.
