‘Westworld’ episode 9, entitled “The Well-Tempered Clavier”, featured a scene that hinted on two timelines. Meanwhile, the mysterious maze and its purpose was finally explained. The incoming episode, entitled “The Bicameral Mind”, is scheduled to air on December 4.
According to The Wrap, episode 9 of ‘Westworld’ may have unlocked the mystery of the maze. Since the show’s debut on HBO last October 2, several fan theories and speculations regarding the maze have cropped up online. It was revealed that the maze is not an actual physical place or destination but is actually a metaphor.
Angela (Talulah Riley) explains to the Man In Black (Ed Harris) in “The Well-Tempered Clavier”, that the maze he is looking for is not for humans. It is only a metaphor of a test of sentience for hosts.
It was also revealed that Arnold’s purpose for Westworld was for it to serve as a catalyst in bringing out the consciousness of hosts through interactions with real human beings. Arnold is Dr. Ford’s (Anthony Hopkins) partner. It was speculated that one of the key measures of sentience in hosts is through the recollection of past memories.
Meanwhile, the episode also hinted that the series is actually running on two separate timelines. According to Comicbook.com, more questions were raised after Logan (Ben Barnes) showed William (Jimmi Simpson) a familiar photograph, which was also featured in episode 1, entitled “The Original.”
In episode 1, Dolores’ (Evan Rachel Wood) father Peter discovered a photograph of a modern woman buried in his ranch. This led him to glitch out, forcing park employees to take him out. In episode 9, the same photograph was pulled out but it was in newer condition.
The woman is revealed to be Logan’s sister and William’s fiancé. Considering that the image was in better shape than it was in episode 1, it may be that Dolores is existing in two separate timelines. It was also speculated that the Man in Black may be a future version of Logan.
‘Westworld’ is a science-fiction western thriller based on Michael Crichton’s 1973 film of the same name. It was created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy for HBO.
Season 1’s episode 10, entitled “The Bicameral Mind”, is scheduled to air on the network on December 4, 2016. It was directed by Nolan and co-written with Joy.
