‘Westworld’ season 2 may not feature the continuing story of William and Dolores’ relationship as confirmed by actor Jimmi Simpson. Meanwhile, co-creator Lisa Joy hinted that a major character may be returning in the incoming season.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Simpson admitted his surprise at learning the connection between his character William and Ed Harris’ mysterious Man in Black. When asked if he had any knowledge of the twist, Simpson replied, “…they weren't telling me anything. Then, around episode three or four, our brilliant makeup designer brought me into the makeup trailer and was looking at my face in a way that no one has ever done.”
He continued, “He starts talking about my eyebrows, and if I would mind if he shaped my eyebrows. I know women change their eyebrow shape, but literally no one has ever asked me if I would change my eyebrow shape. So it caught my attention!”
Simpson went on to reveal that he grew suspicious over the makeover saying, “I started thinking about why someone would change my eyebrows, and the only thing I could come up with is that they wanted me to look like someone else. Then, I figured out that based on dialect and face color that the only person it could be is Ed Harris.”
Season 1’s finale, titled "The Bicameral Mind," revealed the twist during William and Man in Black’s heated confrontation in Escalante. The latter explained that he was, in fact, William.
He desperately searched the park for Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) following her disappearance only to find her and realize that she has no memory of him at all. He then made the decision to transform into a “Black Hat.”
When asked about his character’s return for season 2, Simpson replied, “Well, you know. Nothing's permanent. I'm not contracted to go back, but I'm sure there's a possibility… Based on these writers' skills, if it was their intention for young William to return, I know that he would be there for solid and interesting reasons. But I think this story is told, the story of William and Dolores' love affair. I think that story, tragically, has been told.”
Meanwhile, series co-creator Lisa Joy hinted during an interview LA Times that a major character may be returning to the small screen for season 2. When asked about Harris’ return as the Man in Black, Joy revealed, “Yeah, I mean, how could an arm wound slow that guy down? He’s stronger than that; he can withstand.”
‘Westworld’ season 2 was renewed on HBO last November 2016 and is expected to return sometime in 2018.
