Ukraine and Russia exchanged strikes on each other’s territory Thursday after peace talks in Istanbul failed to yield progress, prolonging a war now in its fourth year.
Russian forces launched mass drone attacks on Ukraine’s Black Sea port city of Odesa, killing one and injuring at least four. The strikes damaged several areas in the UNESCO-listed historic center, including the iconic Pryvoz market. A man’s body was recovered from rubble at a residential building, regional governor Oleh Kiper said.
In Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, Russian glide bombs killed two people and wounded 33. Another civilian died in a drone strike in Sumy, near the Russian border. The central region of Cherkasy also came under attack, leaving seven injured, including a child, and damaging multiple residential buildings. Ukrainian officials reported over 100 drones and four missiles were launched overnight, targeting civilian infrastructure such as seaports and transport hubs.
Ukraine responded by striking Russian territory. In Russia’s Krasnodar region near Sochi, debris from a downed Ukrainian drone killed one woman and injured another. Authorities confirmed an oil facility was hit and temporarily shut down Sochi airport operations.
The latest escalation follows a failed round of talks that focused on potential prisoner swaps but left ceasefire negotiations unresolved. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy condemned the Russian strikes, calling for an “immediate and complete ceasefire.”
The cross-border bombardments underscore rising tensions as Russian attacks intensify beyond the 1,000-kilometer front line, devastating Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure while prompting retaliatory strikes on Russian military and energy assets.
Both nations appear far from a resolution, with ongoing drone warfare threatening to deepen civilian casualties and prolong instability across the region.
