The United States has strongly denounced the continued detention of current and former Yemeni employees of the U.S. Embassy in Yemen by the Houthi movement, calling the arrests unlawful and politically motivated. In a statement on Wednesday, U.S. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott emphasized Washington’s deep concern over the treatment of these local staff, many of whom have been held for extended periods without due process.

Pigott stated that the actions of the Houthis highlight a disturbing pattern of intimidation and repression, noting that the “sham proceedings” against the detainees further demonstrate how the group uses fear and coercion to maintain control. The United States reiterated its demand for the immediate and unconditional release of all detained embassy personnel, stressing their critical role in supporting diplomatic operations prior to the suspension of embassy activities in Yemen.

The U.S. government also urged the international community to pressure the Houthis to end these detentions and respect international law. Washington maintains that the continued targeting of diplomatic staff violates global norms and undermines efforts to stabilize Yemen amid years of conflict.

The situation remains a key point of tension as the Houthis continue to assert influence in northern Yemen while negotiations for lasting peace face ongoing challenges. The U.S. has repeatedly highlighted human rights abuses carried out by the group, pointing to this latest incident as further evidence of the Houthis’ willingness to suppress their own population and obstruct diplomatic engagement.

With diplomatic personnel still in custody, the United States is expected to increase its calls for accountability, urging that all detained individuals be safely returned to their families and that the Houthis cease tactics that escalate regional instability.
