U.S. President Donald Trump declared on Monday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would not face arrest while visiting the United States, following renewed debate over the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant and comments from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that Netanyahu "will not be arrested, in any way, shape, or form" while in the United States. Although he did not directly mention Mamdani, the statement came after the mayor said New York City's legal department was evaluating what legal authority the city might have regarding the Israeli leader if he visits.
The ICC, based in The Hague, issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in 2024 over alleged war crimes related to the Gaza conflict. Israel has rejected the court's jurisdiction and strongly denies all allegations, arguing that the warrant has no legal legitimacy.
During a New York Times podcast interview aired over the weekend, Mamdani said he believes Netanyahu should face justice at The Hague, describing him as a war criminal charged by the ICC. He added that city lawyers are reviewing potential legal options should the Israeli prime minister travel to New York.
Netanyahu traditionally visits New York each September to attend the United Nations General Assembly, making the issue particularly relevant ahead of this year's diplomatic gathering.
Israel responded to Mamdani's remarks in a post on X, dismissing the ICC as a "kangaroo court" and calling the arrest warrant against Netanyahu "bogus." Israeli officials also accused the mayor of using the controversy to shift attention away from his own political challenges.
The ICC, established in 2002, prosecutes individuals accused of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. However, neither the United States nor Israel is a member of the court, and both countries reject its authority over their nationals.
During his mayoral campaign, Mamdani pledged that New York police would arrest Netanyahu if he entered the city. Despite previous public disagreements, Trump and Mamdani held an unexpectedly cordial meeting at the White House shortly after Mamdani's election victory last November, highlighting the complex political backdrop to the latest dispute.
