U.S. President Donald Trump met Venezuelan interim President Delcy Rodriguez in New York on Tuesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, marking their first face-to-face meeting since U.S. forces captured former President Nicolas Maduro in January. The White House subsequently confirmed the meeting took place.
Rodriguez traveled to the United States with a delegation that included Venezuela’s economy vice president, oil minister and representatives of state-owned oil company PDVSA. The delegation has been seeking to present Venezuela as an attractive destination for investment, particularly in energy, mining and other sectors.
The talks come as Washington and Caracas deepen economic engagement under Rodriguez, who previously served as Maduro’s vice president. The Trump administration signed a major oil agreement with Venezuela earlier in September, while Trump has said he wants to attract $100 billion in investment into the country’s oil industry.
Rodriguez’s delegation has also held discussions with U.S. officials, companies and international financial institutions. The Inter-American Development Bank has been working toward approval of a $2.5 billion loan for Venezuela, although the proposal has faced resistance from some board members.
The diplomatic outreach remains politically contentious. Critics of Washington’s Venezuela policy argue that closer cooperation with Rodriguez has reduced pressure for new elections and sidelined opposition figures, including Maria Corina Machado.
More than 50 Venezuelan demonstrators gathered outside the UN on Tuesday, demanding elections and carrying signs including “No Vote No Oil.” Protesters argued that political reforms should accompany any expansion of U.S.-Venezuela economic ties.
During his UN General Assembly address, Trump defended the January operation that removed Maduro and highlighted his administration’s Venezuela policy. Maduro remains jailed in New York while awaiting trial on drug-trafficking charges.
