U.S. President Donald Trump expects Elon Musk to uncover "hundreds of billions of dollars" in fraud and waste at the Pentagon during an upcoming audit. In a Super Bowl interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier, Trump hinted that Musk’s investigation could expand to other federal agencies, including the Department of Education.
The Pentagon’s annual budget nears $1 trillion, with $895 billion in defense spending authorized for the current fiscal year. Trump has tasked Musk, a special government employee, with reducing the federal workforce. Musk’s aides have already sought access to confidential government data, sparking concerns over security risks and legality. Critics argue that these efforts may expose classified programs and bypass congressional oversight.
National Security Adviser Mike Waltz highlighted the Pentagon’s shipbuilding inefficiencies, calling for reforms in procurement and defense spending. “Everything costs too much, takes too long, and delivers too little to soldiers,” Waltz stated on NBC’s Meet the Press.
While bipartisan leaders have criticized Pentagon waste, many Democrats and civil service unions question whether Musk’s newly formed Department of Government Efficiency has the expertise to restructure defense spending. They also point to potential conflicts of interest, as Musk’s companies hold major Pentagon contracts.
Musk’s growing influence in government oversight has drawn mixed reactions. While supporters see his involvement as a long-overdue effort to cut waste, opponents warn of national security risks and ethical concerns. As the audit progresses, the extent of Pentagon mismanagement and Musk’s role in federal restructuring remain key issues in the ongoing debate.
