It looks like all systems go for “True Detective” Season 3, with reports stating that HBO veteran David Milch confirmed to be on board as producer. Entertainment Weekly said sources, who said that the collaboration with show creator Nic Pizzolatto was still in very early stages, but HBO is reportedly confident that Milch’s unconventional working style will help revive the show in its sophomore slump. It is also believed that a concept is already settled for Season 3, and that scripts are already in progress.
But will “True Detective” Season 3 be set in the Wild Wild West? Benjamin Bailey for Nerdist said that considering Milch’s work on “Deadwood,” it is most likely that it will lean towards that.
He wrote, “Landscape and setting play a huge role in “True Detective.” Whether it’s the backwoods of Louisiana or the back alleys of Los Angeles, the landscape of the show is always a character.”
On the other hand, Liz Shannon Miller for IndieWire disagrees with Milch’s involvement in the series. Although Milch has some impressive projects in his resume, he has some recent missteps, too, and a temper that might not brood well for the show’s third installment once HBO greenlights it.
“The question of how much creative control a creator should receive after a big success like “True Detective” is a tricky balancing act for everyone involved. After all, some showrunners thrive when they have the opportunity to really own their show… But there are plenty of counter-examples that showcase how too much creative control and not enough checks and balances end up being the ruin of promising series,” she explains.
