Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau emphasized the importance of protecting his country’s sovereignty ahead of his meeting with King Charles. His statement comes after U.S. President Donald Trump suggested Canada should become the 51st U.S. state.
Speaking to reporters, Trudeau reaffirmed that "standing up for our sovereignty and independence" is a top priority for Canadians. The meeting with King Charles, Canada’s head of state, is expected to address key national concerns.
Trump has repeatedly claimed Canada would benefit from joining the U.S., linking the idea to its vast natural resources. Trudeau, who recently announced he will not seek re-election, acknowledged the seriousness of Trump’s remarks. "This is a real thing," he stated last month, warning that Canada must remain vigilant.
The discussion follows King Charles’ recent invitation to Trump for what could be an unprecedented second state visit to the UK. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer personally delivered the invitation during a high-profile Oval Office meeting.
Trudeau was also asked about Trump’s recent engagement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Expressing his stance, he stated, "I stand with Zelenskiy."
As political tensions rise, Trudeau’s comments highlight growing concerns over Canada’s autonomy. His meeting with King Charles is expected to reinforce Canada’s commitment to its sovereignty amid Trump’s controversial remarks.
