“The Winds of Winter” is long overdue and yet its exact publishing date is still not available as of this time. Its author, George RR Martin, previously admitted that he is having a hard time completing his book but assured fans that he will still publish it and finish all the seven books in his “A Song of Ice and Fire” series.
Apparently, Martin’s progress is really slow since he has been writing for almost nine years already. HBO’s “Game of Thrones” that was based on the “ASOIAF” has aired its finale last year, without waiting for the ending of the book. This is because they need to end the show as scheduled, so the book and TV series have different conclusions.
Publishing date predictions
“The Winds of Winter” was reported to have two possible publication dates as of the moment. The first date is based on what the 71-year-old wrote on his blog last year. In May 2019, he wrote on his “Not a Blog” page.
“If I don’t have ‘THE WINDS OF WINTER’ in hand when I arrive in New Zealand for Worldcon, you have here my formal written permission to imprison me in a small cabin on White Island, overlooking that lake of sulfuric acid, until I’m done,” Martin promised his fans.
The date of the upcoming Worldcon for Science Fiction in New Zealand is on July 29 - Aug. 2, so any time from these dates is considered as the book’s publishing date. As for the second prediction, some fan sites asserted that the most plausible release date is in the year 2021 and not this year.
“I’ve heard a few dates tossed around by industry people,” Brynden Fish, tweeted on March 14 when asked about ‘The Winds of Winter.’ “The most compelling, believable one has it that GRRM currently has (redacted) with an expected publication date of (redacted).”
Will Martin make it to the deadline?
Fish previously said late last year that his sources told him that “TWOW” will be out this year, but he has doubts that George RR Martin will be able to finish the book by the time he attends the Worldcon. He believes it will be this year but not in July or August.
Meanwhile, fans are not losing hope that they will still see “The Winds of Winter” in the bookstores. It may be really late, but even Martin assured everyone that he intends to finish the “ASOIAF” series and even offer more books once he is done.
