“The Vampire Diaries” has had a good run and even survived the departure of its main character, Elena. However, it seems that even though the series has been greenlit for an eighth season, this is likely the end for the vampire drama. Aside from the terrible ratings, Zap2it also writes that several of the actors are leaving.
Nina Dobrev who played Elena left when season 6 ended and though it was rumored that she might be coming back, her reason for leaving and staying away makes this unlikely. Ian Somerhalder who plays Damon also announced that season 8 would be his last, as did Kat Graham who plays Elena’s best witch friend Bonnie.
So with so many of the major characters either having already left or intending to leave, it doesn’t seem like the show has much of a future. Then again, The CW has been a little more tolerant than most networks when it comes to low ratings. This is why shows like “Supernatural” have been able to go on for as long as they did.
Mark Pedowitz, the president of The CW, did say that he hopes that the series won’t be cancelled. As such, “The Vampire Diaries” could conceivably go on beyond season 8, but would it even be worth it?
In less depressing spoiler news, it seems that Stefan and Caroline’s relationship will be solidified in season 8. At least, this is what Candice King who plays Caroline told TVLine. Supposedly, the two might even find time to do things that normal couples do, like going on dates.
"I think they've had kind-of dates, but she was pregnant,” the actress said. “It was a very interesting start to a relationship for them. So maybe some normalcy. I think that would be kinky for them."
“The Vampire Diaries” will return for its season 8 premiere on The CW this fall.
