Ben Affleck finally confirmed rumors that he will be passing up the opportunity to direct the upcoming superhero movie “The Batman.” Mark Hughes on Forbes said the “Gone Girl” actor will also star, and has been developing a screenplay for the said movie in the last several months.
According to Affleck, taking on the responsibility of directing the film might be too taxing for him. He said in a statement, “There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”
Deadline said Warner Bros, the studio behind the upcoming movie, is reportedly eyeing “Captain Fantastic” director Matt Ross, among others. However, the studio is set to talk to Matt Reeves first. Matt Reeves directed the latest “Planet of the Apes” installment.
Although Warner Bros issued its support for Affleck stepping down from director duties, Hughes said there has been no mention about the development of the script. Considering the number of DC Comics-based movies to be released this year, Hughes noted that it would be better for Warner to adopt a “wait-and-see” action first before fully supporting the planned movie until the script has been made and approved, and for fans to react.
The vision for “The Batman” movie is said to be one part original story, also by Affleck, and one part DC Comics version, the Huffington Post reported. Affleck initially confirmed that he was helming the “Batman” reboot on a “Jimmy Kimmel Live” January 9 appearance.
