Nike has created a buzz among fans eagerly awaiting Naomi Osaka's return to Grand Slam competition. The sportswear giant recently teased Osaka's outfit at the 2024 Australian Open.
With its debut in all black, fans are excited to learn more about the details surrounding the comeback star's attire.
Connection to the Past
Interestingly, the dress bears a striking resemblance to an outfit previously worn by another tennis player. Essentially Sports noted that the legendary Serena Williams sported a very similar ensemble in the final tournament before her retirement. Clad in black with a crystal-embellished bodice, swirling skirt, and sheer sleeves, Williams left a lasting impression on her fans. Upon noticing the resemblance in Osaka's dress, it becomes evident where the inspiration came from.
One common thread between the two tennis stars is their collaboration with Nike. Both Williams and Osaka entrusted the renowned brand with the design of their memorable outfits. Even the bottom half of Osaka's dress resembles the swirling layer skirt that Williams wore during her final tournament.
Osaka's Return to Grand Slam
Having not competed in a Grand Slam tournament since the 2022 US Open, Osaka took a break from the sport to embrace motherhood. The birth of her daughter, Shai, has been a driving force in her comeback journey. Two weeks ago, the former world No. 1 made a winning return at the Brisbane International, only to be outplayed by former No. 1 Karolina Pliskova in a thrilling three-set match, as per Tennis.com.
Osaka's highly anticipated return to the Grand Slam stage will occur on Rod Laver Arena. Scheduled for the second night session, she will face the No. 16 seed, Caroline Garcia. Interestingly, their last meeting happened at the same tournament, where Osaka emerged victorious en route to her fourth Grand Slam triumph in 2021.
During the 2018 Flushing Meadows tournament, Osaka famously defeated Serena Williams to claim her first Grand Slam title. This landmark victory signaled the rise of a new tennis star. Williams, unfortunately, retired from the sport following a third-round exit to Ajla Tomljanovic.
As the 2024 Australian Open approaches, fans eagerly await Naomi Osaka's comeback on the Grand Slam stage. The intriguing connection between her outfit and Serena Williams' final tournament attire adds excitement. With her return in full swing, Osaka aims to make her mark again.
