German sports apparel giant Puma is reportedly keen on becoming Barcelona's shirt sponsor. According to Mundo Deportivo, the company is aware of the Blaugrana's ongoing tensions with its current sponsor, Nike, and is looking to jump in.
Nike's Current Deal and Barcelona's Demands
Diari ARA reports that Nike is currently paying the club €105 million per year plus €50 million in variables to be their shirt sponsor. However, Barca has asked for an increase in the amount, while Nike has explored the possibility of reducing it.
According to Barca Blaugranes, the club has complained about Nike not making enough products, with repeated shortages in stock at the club's facilities in recent times. Nike also tried to renegotiate their deal during the pandemic to pay Barça less, while the Blaugrana argued they should be paid more as they are one of Nike's most significant sources of income.
Furthermore, Barcelona is also seeking more freedom in selling its products, something the agreement with Nike does not provide for, as per Sportskeeda.
Replacing the 'Swoosh' With the Puma Cat
The two sides don't see eye to eye, and a renewal of their contract seems like the last possible option. With Puma making a bold move to dominate and present Barcelona with an irresistible offer in the upcoming 2025-26 season, the possibility arises that the 2024-25 campaign will bid farewell to the famous 'Swoosh' on the Barça shirt.
Puma has genuinely established itself as a powerhouse in the world of football shirt sponsors, boasting an impressive portfolio that includes Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund, and AC Milan. Not to mention, they have the backing of none other than the sensational Brazilian superstar Neymar Jr.
While sources at Barça hesitated to confirm Puma's interest, they couldn't help themselves from acknowledging the complexity of the matter within the decision-makers' circles. This complexity stems from the strained relationship between Barcelona and Nike, as serious disagreements have plagued their partnership in recent years.
Nike has been Barça's kit sponsor since 1998, with their current deal running till 2028. Barcelona can bypass the deal, meaning Puma or any other company could become their shirt sponsors as early as the 2025-26 season.
Puma's interest in becoming Barcelona's shirt sponsor signifies their growing presence in the world of football. By securing sponsorship deals with top clubs like Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund, and AC Milan and having the endorsement of Neymar Jr., Puma aims to solidify its position in the market further.
