‘Mr. Robot’ season 2’s episode 4 follows Elliot’s continuing struggle over his own state of mind. It was speculated he may lose the battle against Mr. Robot. Meanwhile, the cast attended the San Diego Comic Con and teased new details about season 2.
The synopsis posted on International Business Times stated, “Elliot befriends Ray, hoping he can finally delete Mr. Robot; Dom makes a discovery; Darlene considers whether the FBI or Dark Army are the bigger threat.” The preceding episodes followed Elliot (Rami Malek) as he struggled to take control of his mind once and for all. His friendship with Ray (Craig Robinson) may help free him from Mr. Robot (Christian Slater).
In the incoming episode’s promo, Rey tells Elliot that the only way to deal with Mr. Robot is to “make peace with the enemy.” It seems that Mr. Robot has the same intention. He says, “You think I want this? Two halves in perpetual war?”
He then tells Elliot that they need to play a game where there will only be one victor. He says, “One game. The winner takes all.” When Elliot asks about losing, Mr. Robot simply responds, “I get to be in charge.”
It would be interesting to see how things play out between Elliot and his grand delusion. At this point, it is unclear whether he will find it in himself to resist the anarchist residing in his subconscious. Should he fail, this may mean total loss of control of his own mind.
Elliot has turned to Adderall to suppress Mr. Robot, despite being a temporary fix. He realized that his new drug of choice is not worth risking his health for and he needs to find a better way to take gain back control of his sense of being. It seems that his new friend may know a way to fight off his delusions and paranoia.
Meanwhile, the cast of ‘Mr. Robot’ recently attended the San Diego Comic-Con on July 21. The panel consisted of Malek, Slater, Carly Chaikin, Portia Doubleday, and Grace Gummer. According to Variety, Slater explained the relationship between Mr. Robot and Elliot in season 2.
Slater said that in season 1, Mr. Robot was an idealized version of Elliot’s father in the latter’s mind. Mr. Robot was “somebody very mysterious and powerful guiding him”. However, in season 2, Elliot tries to turn things around by restricting Mr. Robot’s control in his mind only to anger the delusion.
Malek explored more about his character’s emotional state in season 2 saying, "I think the big question that he's asking is how can each and everyone of us go outside of ourselves and do something special and do something that affects all of us."
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Malek also predicted that Elliot will be confronting his involvement in the death of his girlfriend Shayla (Frankie Shaw) in season one sometime soon in the series.
He said, "Shayla, that issue's going to haunt him for quite awhile. I don’t think its settled in for him just what kind of affect that will have on him and the implications of that. I think there's a bit of denial with him that he might have caused that in a way, which he did. Her loss would not have happened had he not been in her life.”
Shayla was introduced as Elliot’s drug dealer who supplies him morphine and withdrawal medication in season one. She was found with her throat slit in the trunk of a car after Elliot broke Fernando Vera (Elliot Villar) out of prison. It turned out that Shayla was killed on Vera’s orders.
Malek added, “One day down the line its going to fly fast in his face and probably break him because Elliot has a tendency of being broken, sadly. He always gets back up."
‘Mr. Robot’ season 2’s episode 4 is scheduled to air on July 27, 2016 on The USA Network.
