McDonald's is set to launch its new Collector's Meal on August 13. This promotion features six collectible cups showcasing iconic memorabilia from the brand's history. Available for a limited time, this promotion pairs nostalgic designs with combo meals, offering fans a chance to relive cherished memories.
McDonald's Introduces Collector's Meal with Six Iconic Collectible Cups, Launching August 13
Nearly everyone has likely owned at least one McDonald's collectible. Whether a water glass printed with Mayor McCheese or a Moana Happy Meal toy, diners from various eras of the fast-food chain’s history have a trinket or two connecting them to the McDonald's brand. According to Food & Beverage, this month, McDonald's is capitalizing on that enduring fandom by releasing the new Collector's Meal, featuring six different collectible cups aimed at "inspiring a new generation of fans."
The promotion, commencing on August 13 and available for a limited time, pairs a series of combo meals with one of six cups. Each cup showcases imagery of iconic McDonald's collectibles throughout history. The featured themes include:
- Beanie Babies
- Barbie & Hot Wheels
- Hello Kitty & Peanuts
- Shrek, Jurassic Park & Minions
- Coca-Cola Logo
- McDonald's Logo
Although it may seem meta to feature Coca-Cola and McDonald's on McDonald's soft drink cups, it makes sense considering the strength of both brand identities. McDonald's has long maintained a cast of trademarked characters, such as Ronald McDonald, Birdie, Grimace, Hamburglar, Mayor McCheese, and Officer Big Mac, who have become famous for their rights.
McDonald's and Coca-Cola's Longstanding Partnership Celebrated in New Collector's Meal Featuring Nostalgic Cups
As for Coca-Cola, the two companies inked a deal in 1955, helping each other expand into global brands. Their relationship, described by The New York Times as "unique and symbiotic," makes Coca-Cola's inclusion in this nostalgic campaign a no-brainer.
The remaining cups represent some of the most popular collectibles distributed by McDonald's over the years. Teenie Beanies, first released as a Happy Meal toy in 1997, were so popular that customers would form lines out the door to receive them. A few years earlier, the releases of original Barbie figurines and Hot Wheels cars were so successful that McDonald's re-released them several times over the ensuing years. Many of these collectibles now fetch impressive sums on the secondary market.
The new McDonald's Collector's Meal is unique in that it is available at any time of day, including breakfast. Depending on the time of visit, customers can acquire a collectible cup with the purchase of either a combo meal that includes a Sausage Egg McMuffin, Hash Brown, and coffee (during breakfast hours) or a combo meal with a 10-piece Chicken McNuggets or Big Mac with fries and a drink.
As McDonald's continues experimenting with promotions like celebrity meals, the $5 value meal, and large-format burgers, the Collector’s Meal offers another entry point into the American consciousness. It irresistibly lights up nostalgia centers and reminds us that this brand has been part of our lives for nearly seven decades. Additionally, it allows millennials to regale Gen Z with tales of how wild the Beanie Babies craze once was.
