Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr will always be compared long after the former hangs his gloves for good. For some, the undefeated boxer is the better fighter, while others argue that it’s the Filipino slugger who’s the true warrior between the two.
Now, it’s likely that the comparison will be buzzing once again as Floyd Mayweather Jr has criticized Manny Pacquiao’s boxing style. Mayweather spoke with Pacquiao’s advisor Sean Gibbons last week to discuss a possible rematch.
The American, who has always been vocal about his opinion of others, told Gibbons that Manny Pacquiao would only run around the ring if the bout takes place. Gibbons, of course, came to the defense of his client and told Floyd Mayweather Jr that the legend would not be doing such a thing, IBT reported.
Manny Pacquiao is more aggressive than Floyd Mayweather Jr
“Floyd told me that what the Senator’s going to do is just move around the ring, and I told him the Senator’s not doing that as he is coming off one of his biggest wins (against Thurman),” Gibbons said. It’s surprising that Floyd Mayweather Jr is peddling this narrative, given that he was the one who was avoiding Manny Pacquiao throughout their match in 2015.
Indeed, most of the criticism on the fight can be levied on the undefeated boxer’s defensive style, opting to outpoint his opponent rather than engage him head-on to entertain the crowd. Manny Pacquiao has always been the aggressive fighter, while Floyd Mayweather Jr is more a calculating machine that breaks down his opponents down through defense and counterpunching.
Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather rematch is supposedly happening
As for the possibility of the two slugging it out again, reports are coming in that the rematch may actually happen. Floyd Mayweather Jr was supposedly going to have an exhibition match in China but supposedly backed away from negotiations as he wants to fight Manny Pacquiao again, BoxingScene reported. Unfortunately, details about the fight are unlikely to surface this year.
Manny Pacquiao is slated to take Mikey Garcia next, and he’ll be focusing on that fight before entertaining the idea of fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr next. Of course, with the fighting senator repeatedly expressing his desire for the rematch, it’s safe to assume he’ll be hinting about the bout in the coming months. But it’s also important to remember that Mayweather is an unpredictable individual, and his decision on the matter could change at any time.
