U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Saturday that the Trump administration is working with five Republican-led states to replicate Florida’s controversial “Alligator Alcatraz” detention facility.

Speaking at a press conference near the site, Noem stated, “We’ve had several other states that are actually using Alligator Alcatraz as a model for how they can partner with us.” She did not disclose the names of the states currently in talks.

“Alligator Alcatraz” is a remote migrant detention center located approximately 37 miles (60 kilometers) from Miami, deep in the Everglades. Surrounded by alligators, crocodiles, and invasive pythons, the facility’s extreme location is intended to deter escape attempts and minimize security risks in urban areas.

The Trump administration has emphasized strong border enforcement and stricter immigration measures. The expansion of this facility model reflects a renewed push to establish high-security, remote detention centers in cooperation with like-minded state governments.

Officials argue that Alligator Alcatraz improves safety, reduces strain on urban infrastructure, and provides a scalable solution to manage illegal immigration. However, the facility has drawn criticism from human rights advocates, who say its isolation raises concerns about detainee safety, legal access, and humane treatment.

Noem defended the initiative as a practical response to increasing migration pressures. “We’re focused on securing the nation and working with states that are ready to lead,” she said.

The announcement comes amid growing political attention on border security ahead of the 2024 election, with the Trump administration signaling a tougher nationwide stance on immigration enforcement.
