North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally supervised major air force drills, emphasizing heightened military readiness, according to state media reports on Saturday. Kim visited the 1st Air Division on Thursday to observe anti-aircraft combat and air strike exercises, calling for “a breakthrough in war preparation” across all military units, as reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
Video footage aired on North Korean state television showed a MiG-29 fighter jet launching a missile resembling a Russian mid- to long-range air-to-air missile. Hong Min, a senior analyst at the Korea Institute for National Unification, confirmed the missile's likely origin and purpose.
This latest drill follows a series of high-profile military inspections by Kim in recent weeks. Earlier this month, he oversaw a missile launch, inspected munitions and tank factories, conducted tank firing drills, and reviewed elite special operations forces. He also made a rare diplomatic appearance at the Russian Embassy in Pyongyang, reaffirming North Korea’s alliance with Moscow.
In parallel, North Korea criticized the U.S. for keeping it on a list of countries not fully cooperating with counterterrorism efforts. Pyongyang has appeared on this list annually since 1997, according to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency. A spokesperson from North Korea’s Foreign Ministry warned that continued "hostile provocations" by Washington would deepen tensions and prompt countermeasures from Pyongyang.
“The more the U.S. provokes the DPRK with unnecessary and malicious acts, the further it will escalate irreconcilable hostility,” the statement read, using the country’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
As military activities ramp up, regional observers are closely monitoring North Korea’s maneuvers and diplomatic rhetoric, amid concerns of escalating conflict on the Korean Peninsula.
