The recent statement by the chair of the Republican National Committee regarding the January 6 Capitol riots drew widespread backlash, which also led to the censuring of Republican Reps. Adam Kinzinger and Liz Cheney. Kinzinger spoke out about the RNC’s censure, ripping into House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy for allowing Donald Trump to control the GOP.
Speaking on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Kinzinger commented on getting censured by the RNC, especially as both he and Cheney are serving on the congressional committee probing the Capitol insurrection. The Illinois congressman said that the recent statement by the RNC chair Ronna Romney McDaniel and the censure is a “defining moment” for the GOP and for Republican leaders, especially in both the House and the Senate.
Kinzinger also called on the public as well as the media to question every Republican whether or not they agree with the RNC’s statement of the riots being “legitimate political discourse.”
“It’s a defining moment for the party, and I think it’s a defining moment for every member of the House or the Senate or any Republican leader,” said Kinzinger.
“Kevin McCarthy obviously, who I think asked about this in response, he just went after Liz and I goes to show he is the weakest leader that has ever, frankly, existed in that position. So I think every member of the media, every citizen, every person out there needs to pin down every Republican and say do you side with what the RNC did or do you condemn what they did and don’t let them – trust me, politicians are good at skirting around that answer,” Kinzinger added.
The censuring of Kinzinger and Cheney by the RNC also drew backlash from other Republicans, including Utah senator Mitt Romney. Romney, who is McDaniel’s uncle, told reporters that the censuring of Kinzinger and Cheney was “inappropriate” and even ripped into his niece’s statement of the insurrection.
Romney also added that the controversy the RNC has brought on would be damaging to the GOP, especially in the midterm elections. “Anything that my party does that comes across as being stupid is not going to help us,” said the Utah lawmaker.
