British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is reportedly weighing his political future following Andy Burnham’s commanding parliamentary election victory, a result that has intensified calls within the Labour Party for a leadership change.

According to sources familiar with the situation, Starmer spent the weekend discussing his position with family members and close allies as pressure mounted from Labour lawmakers and ministers. A key conversation with Burnham, the former Greater Manchester mayor, is expected to play a significant role in determining whether Starmer remains in office or steps aside.

Burnham’s decisive win in Makerfield, where he defeated the populist Reform UK party, has strengthened his standing within Labour and prompted renewed speculation about a potential leadership contest. Several Labour MPs and ministers are reportedly urging Starmer to establish a timetable for his departure, believing it would allow for a smoother transition and prevent a divisive internal battle.

The debate comes amid declining approval ratings for Starmer. Labour’s disappointing performance in May’s local elections further exposed voter dissatisfaction, while recent surveys suggest Burnham would be favored by party members in a formal leadership race.

Adding to the pressure, U.S. President Donald Trump publicly predicted on Truth Social that Starmer would resign as UK prime minister, criticizing his handling of immigration and North Sea oil production policies.

Reports also suggest Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper privately encouraged Starmer to consider stepping down, although her office has not commented on the claims. Meanwhile, Business Secretary Peter Kyle acknowledged the political challenges facing the prime minister, describing Starmer as deeply reflective about what the country expects from him.

Despite growing calls for change, Starmer recently stated he would contest any formal Labour leadership challenge. His supporters argue that Labour’s landslide victory in the 2024 general election gives him a mandate to govern until 2029.

As uncertainty continues, Burnham’s allies are reportedly giving Starmer time to consider an orderly transfer of power. Former minister Jess Phillips suggested the Labour leader may have reached “the end of the road,” emphasizing that any departure should be handled with dignity.

The coming days are expected to be critical for both Starmer and the Labour Party as questions surrounding the future of the UK prime ministership continue to dominate British politics.
