Kamala Harris has emerged as the clear favorite in the first poll for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, garnering a commanding 41% of support among Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters. The early poll results, conducted with 457 respondents, indicate the Vice President is solidifying her position as the frontrunner for the party’s next presidential race.
Harris Dominates as Newsom Trails Behind
Trailing far behind Harris is California Governor Gavin Newsom, who secured only 8% of the votes. Despite his high-profile leadership in the Golden State, Newsom appears unable to capture the momentum needed to close the gap. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro landed in third place with 7%, followed closely by Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, each receiving 6%.
The stark disparity in support underscores Harris’s unique standing within the party. Analysts suggest her national visibility, paired with her historic role as the first woman of color to serve as Vice President, has cemented her popularity among Democratic voters.
Progressive Favorites and Newcomers Struggle to Gain Traction
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of the most prominent progressive voices in Congress, captured just 4% of the vote. Meanwhile, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer garnered 3%, rounding out the list of prominent contenders in single digits. Other candidates, including Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, failed to break past 2%, highlighting the significant gap between Harris and the rest of the field.
Despite her low polling numbers, Ocasio-Cortez’s inclusion reflects the enduring influence of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. However, the data suggests that even popular progressive figures may struggle to gain mainstream traction in a primary dominated by Harris.
Unsure Voters and the Battle Ahead
While Harris enjoys a commanding lead, 16% of respondents remain unsure of whom they would support, leaving room for other candidates to potentially gain ground as the race heats up. This sizable portion of undecided voters could play a crucial role in shaping the dynamics of the Democratic primary.
The poll also highlights a broader uncertainty among voters, with many still weighing the party’s direction post-2024. The results suggest that while Harris’s base of support is strong, her ability to galvanize the broader electorate will be tested in the coming months.
Implications for the 2028 Race
Harris’s early dominance in the polls underscores her position as the likely successor to President Joe Biden’s legacy, should she decide to run. Her commanding lead suggests widespread confidence in her leadership within the Democratic base. However, the lack of significant competition at this stage could spark debate over whether other prominent Democrats will step up to challenge her.
While Harris leads comfortably, the road to the nomination remains long, and shifts in public opinion are inevitable as the race progresses.
