KFC Canada's recent move to offer a halal-only menu in Ontario, excluding pork products, has sparked a social media debate. Effective May 15, this change aims to provide inclusive dining options but has led to mixed reactions, with some supporting the move and others calling it unacceptable.
KFC Canada's Halal Menu Rollout Sparks #BoycottKFC, Excludes Pork in Most Ontario Locations
The hashtag #BoycottKFC is circulating on social media, along with screenshots of a statement issued by KFC Canada on May 8 outlining its intention to implement inclusive menu options.
As part of the initiative, the American fast-food chain partnered with its KFC Canada Muslim team to implement halal menu options in all KFC Canada stores in Ontario, except Thunder Bay and Ottawa, effective May 15.
The initiative has involved training restaurant staff to adapt to this relatively recent change and establishing partnerships with Halal product suppliers such as Maple Lodge Farms and Zabiha Halal.
Furthermore, the restaurant has discontinued porcine products at all locations, except those co-branded with Taco Bell.
Although some individuals find the decision acceptable, citing that it enables "more people to dine comfortably at KFC," others regard it as "totally unacceptable."
Additionally, numerous individuals are inquiring why Thunder Bay and Ottawa have been excluded.
“Odd they leave out Ottawa considering its large Muslim population,” one individual said.
Amid the controversy, one individual humorously remarks, "Imagine #BoycottKFC because you are unaware of the definition of halal."
Debate Over KFC Canada's Halal Menu: Inclusivity Questioned, Customers Consider Alternatives
According to NOW, Halal meat is permissible by Islamic dietary regulations. It entails the ethical treatment of animals and the complete removal of blood during slaughter, guaranteeing tender and wholesome flesh, as defined by the Halal Flesh Association, Canada.
Additionally, numerous individuals emphasize that they will be transitioning to alternative fast-food establishments, such as Popeyes or Mary Brown's.
“So just FYI to everyone that is upset by this – Popeyes in Canada has always been Halal,” an X user reacted.
“The best thing on Twitter today is Canadian right-wingers reacting to the news of KFC Canada going halal by saying they’re switching to Mary Brown’s, not knowing Mary Browns has been certified halal in most big-city locations for years,” added another individual.
In the interim, there is also a debate regarding whether the abolition of pork is consistent with inclusivity.
“It says it’s rolling this out to be more diverse and inclusive. Literally excluding pork from the menu. That seems less inclusive,” one X user noted.
“Won’t have any affect on me, but this certainly opens their products up to both Muslims and Jews. Btw, this won’t change the price or taste for non Muslims. We wouldn’t even know if they didn’t tell you,” one X user shared.
