Japan’s top trade negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, stated on Sunday that the schedule for the next round of Japan-U.S. tariff negotiations is still under discussion. Akazawa, who also serves as Japan’s Economic Revitalization Minister, expressed his intention to meet with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent during Bessent’s next visit to Japan.
Speaking to reporters at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport after returning from Washington, Akazawa emphasized that the negotiations will move forward only when all issues are resolved together. “An agreement will be reached only when all elements are settled as a package. Until then, nothing is agreed upon,” he said.
Akazawa refrained from commenting on the current progress of the talks, highlighting the sensitive and comprehensive nature of the discussions. His remarks echo a familiar stance in trade diplomacy, where no single aspect is finalized until the entire deal is concluded.
The Japan-U.S. tariff discussions have garnered international attention, especially with both countries seeking to strengthen economic ties amid global trade uncertainties. Japan is aiming to secure favorable terms while navigating complex economic and political dynamics with the United States, its key ally and trading partner.
The talks also come as the U.S. reevaluates its trade strategy under President Donald Trump’s second term, placing renewed focus on bilateral deals and tariff realignments. Both sides are expected to address key issues including industrial tariffs, agricultural imports, and broader economic cooperation.
As anticipation builds for the next round of negotiations, Akazawa’s comments signal Japan’s commitment to a comprehensive and strategic outcome. The upcoming potential meeting with Secretary Bessent could be pivotal in shaping the direction of future Japan-U.S. trade relations.
