‘Gilmore Girls: A Year In the Life’ actor Sean Gunn teased that his character Kirk will get a bigger role although he still remains the quirky guy viewers know. Showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino also revealed that Richard’s death will fuel the revival series.
According to Variety, one of Star Hollow’s quirkiest residents is set to make a big comeback. Actor Sean Gunn, who plays Kirk Gleason, admitted that his character still remains the town oddball in the series. However, Kirk’s adventures will continue and will get a bigger role in the upcoming Netflix revival of one of television’s most popular shows, which ran from 2000 to 2007.
Gunn appeared in early episodes of ‘Gilmore Girls’ playing several characters. In season 1’s episode 2, he played a DSL installer named Mick. Gunn recalled, “The agent I had at the time had recommended I pass on the audition… But my manager said it was cool. I understood the tone of the show just from reading it.” Kirk became a permanent character in episode 5 when he was introduced as a new citizen of Stars Hollow.
The character had a dozen of odd jobs – from being a cashier in a beauty shop to running various entrepreneurial activities. It became the show’s running gag that in every appearance in the show, Kirk would have a different job.
Gunn said, “It was a joy to read the new scripts and get excited about all the new little Kirk adventures.” When asked about his role in the upcoming series revival, he teased, “I had a lot of good stuff to do.”
Meanwhile, showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino revealed during a previous interview that the revival is homage to cast member Edward Hermann. Hermann played Richard Gilmore, Lorelai’s father and Rory’s grandfather, in the original series. He succumbed to brain cancer in December 2014.
According to Heavy, Palladino said, “It’s safe to say that the death of Richard Gilmore, the death of Ed Herrmann, looms large over everything… Dealing with the death of Richard is going to impact all of them, because when somebody close to you dies your whole life comes into a weird focus for a minute. Like, what direction am I walking?”
One of the revival’s main plot points will be Emily’s process of mourning her husband and how grief will affect the entire Graham household. Kelly Bishop, who plays Herrmann’s on-screen wife Emily, said, “It’s sad without my darling Edward Herrmann… We used to do our crossword puzzle together in the makeup trailer. If we had a short day and were feeling festive or belligerent, we’d go across the street and have a martini together.”
Lauren Graham, who plays Lorelei, admitted that it was an “emotional experience” being back on the show without her on-screen father. She said, “It has the loss of a person I love around it. I went to dinner with Ed frequently. It was a real loss of a friend.”
‘Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life’ is a four-part mini-series intended as the continuation to ‘Gilmore Girls’. It is scheduled to air on Netflix on November 25, 2016.
