Over the past month, India has experienced tremors with the epicenter being in the capital Delhi. However, experts warn that these tremors may be a sign of a major earthquake that will occur over the coming days.
Express reports that experts have interpreted the tremors that India’s national capital region have been experiencing for a month between April and May may be an indicator of a major earthquake in the coming days. According to the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology Chief Dr. Kalachand Sain, there is seismic activity happening in the capital region which can result in a major earthquake in Delhi.
Indian Institute of Technology Professor Chandon Ghose also echoed Dr. Sain’s belief but pointed out that there are builders who do not comply with the earthquake regulations set in place for structures. “Everyone knows that Delhi-NCR falls under seismic zone-4, and it’s prone to tremors, but still most of the builders do not conform to the norms of the BIS...So on any given day, if an earthquake of higher magnitude strikes here, the consequences could be grievous.”
Professor Ghose also compares the safety standards of structures in India to Japan, which is at the Pacific Ring of Fire. Professor Ghose noted that Japan’s structures are able to withstand tremors that are up to a magnitude 7 or 8 on the scale.
Just Wednesday, an earthquake hit Delhi and Noida with a magnitude of 3 on the Richter scale. Fortunately, no casualties or property damage were recorded. On the same day, a magnitude-4 tremor hit the southeastern part of Sohra which is close to the India-Bangladesh border.
Even as earthquakes are occurring in parts of the world, the coronavirus pandemic remains the single biggest concern and has forced many of the affected nations into staying indoors to slow the spread. However, new studies on the pandemic have provided some hope such as a recent study that suggests a way to prevent a second wave of the virus. Sorbonne Professor of Emergency Medicine Yonathan Freund claims that there is a way to prevent a second wave of the virus.
Freund theorized via Fraser Nelson of The Telegraph, “End lockdown now. Closely monitor what happens. If it starts again, we will see it very quickly - and take measures.” Freund reasoned that because there a lot of people appear to be unable to contract the coronavirus, the lockdown may have been important, but the epidemic may actually have blown over.
