France will host the 2026 G7 Summit from June 14 to 16 in Evian-les-Bains, an Alpine spa town on the shores of Lake Geneva, French President Emmanuel Macron announced Tuesday. Macron emphasized a commitment to unity and working with trusted global partners to strengthen international influence.
Leaders from the Group of Seven—France, Germany, the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, Italy, and the European Union—will gather for discussions on global economic and political challenges. Evian-les-Bains, which borders Switzerland, last hosted the G7 in 2003. That year was notable as it marked Russia’s first inclusion, temporarily expanding the group to the G8.
However, Russia was expelled in 2014 following its annexation of Crimea. U.S. President Donald Trump recently criticized the decision to remove Russia, calling it a mistake, further highlighting ongoing divisions among the G7 countries.
Trump departed early from the 2025 summit held in the Canadian Rockies, prompting speculation about his engagement. Macron dismissed suggestions of disengagement, stating that Trump participated in all major sessions and discussions, including dinner debates. “He missed only one session. It wouldn’t be fair to say he wasn’t involved,” Macron told reporters, defending the Canadian presidency’s efforts.
Macron also noted that the 2026 summit could include new formats, signaling potential adjustments to how future G7 meetings are structured.
This upcoming summit is expected to play a critical role in shaping policy on international cooperation, economic recovery, climate change, and geopolitical stability—key issues that remain at the heart of G7 discussions.
By selecting Evian again, France underscores its tradition of hosting major diplomatic events in symbolic, historically significant locations.
