A report has revealed that former President Donald Trump’s super political action committee has spent a portion of its spending for 2022 on an event back in February in his Mar-a-Lago resort. The report notes that the event in Mar-a-Lago was for candidates the former president has endorsed as well as the PAC’s donors.
Trump’s super PAC, Make America Great Again Again! Inc. held an event on February 23 at Mar-a-Lago, where the PAC, which is run by the former president’s allies, spent one-fifth of its spending for 2022. The event in February was reported on by the New York Times in January and was described as an “elaborate forum” for GOP candidates Trump has endorsed and donors who have shelled out up to $125,000 per person to the PAC.
The super PAC paid $318,361.39 for the entire event, or 23% of its 2022 spending, according to the outlet’s Shane Goldmacher, who also reported the event in January.
Texas businessman and Republican fund-raiser Roy. W. Bailey, who sent emails to the donors, disclosed that the PAC’s finance director is Kimberly Guilfoyle, who is the partner of Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr, and the committee’s board consists of Pam Bondi - a former attorney general for Florida who advised Trump during his first impeachment, Richard Grenell - Trump’s former ambassador to Germany who also served as his acting DNI, and Matthew G. Whitaker – who served as Trump’s acting attorney general.
The former president remains under intense scrutiny due to his legal battles, investigations, and the frustrations expressed by his own advisers and supporters. As Trump seeks to maintain his influence over the Republican Party, Trump’s biographer Michael D’Antonio said that the former president’s streak of not being held accountable for his actions is coming to an end as his influence on the GOP begins to wane and his legal problems increase.
In a piece for CNN, D’Antonio cited the former president’s recent endorsements of GOP candidates that have resulted in criticism and the low turnout in his rallies, paired with some Republican lawmakers publicly taking swipes at Trump. D’Antonio said that Trump’s future looks bleak as he seeks to maintain his influence over the GOP.
