The United States is on its way out of its lockdown despite the coronavirus cases already reaching over a million as some states are already preparing to reopen. However, with the number of cases still at an exponentially high number along with the number of deaths, President Donald Trump said he will not extend the social distancing period as it expires today.
The Guardian reports that Trump will not be extending the social distancing period once it expires today. This follows reports that the death toll of people who died from the coronavirus reach over 60,000, higher than the 20 years of the Vietnam war. The United States is the worst-hit country with a third of the overall cases in the world. Unfortunately, the death toll is expected to go up over the coming weeks.
“They’ll be fading out because now the governors are doing it,” said Trump, who previously clashed with the state governors over control of reopening states.
Following his announcement that the social distancing period will end on the 30th, his son-in-law and senior White House adviser Jared Kushner likened the administration’s highly-criticized response to the crisis as a success story. With the floor back to Trump, the president also gave an update on testing a possible drug for the coronavirus, at the same time when the numbers in the country’s economy went down 4.8 percent.
At the moment, the White House is putting its focus into jumpstarting the economy again, doing so from state to state. This is being done despite concerns from many that a second, more dangerous wave of the pandemic may come in by the summer due to the lack of testing and contact tracing.
Meanwhile, Trump is also up for reelection this year, and many have now assumed that he will be going up against former vice president Joe Biden, who has since become the presumptive nominee. The polls that have been going around report that more people are planning to vote for Biden, who has since overtaken Trump even in polls held in battleground states. Due to the staggering polls and his diminishing chances of getting re-elected, Trump lashed out on his campaign manager Brad Parscale.
The president reportedly engaged in a shouting match with both Parscale and Republican National Committee Chair Ronna Romney McDaniel, after they told him to cut back on the White House press briefings as it was doing more harm than good on his chances with swing-state voters.
