Senator Elizabeth Warren announced that she will be ultimately bowing out of the presidential race. Following the news, many Democrat lawmakers have expressed their sadness while at the last viable female candidate having to leave.
A few days after former New York mayor Mike Bloomberg announced his decision to suspend his campaign, Warren announced her departure as well, leaving many of her supporters and fellow lawmakers saddened as the Democrat candidates now narrowed down to two white men in their 70’s: Senator Bernie Sanders and former vice president Joe Biden despite having a very diverse roster of potential presidential candidates at the very beginning.
Congresswoman Jackie Speier, who has not publicly endorsed anyone, said she felt disheartened as she wanted Warren to succeed “in the worst way possible.” Speier added that the country has yet to come to the same level of understanding as other countries in that a woman can become head of state.
Among the Democrat candidates was Senator Kamala Harris, who later bowed out of the race in December. Harris also seemed to echo Speier’s sentiments and said that there is still more work to do “to make it very clear that women are exceptionally qualified and capable of being commander-in-chief of the United States of America.”
Congresswoman Susan Wild, who, despite not having the same ideology as Warren, also expressed her sadness at Warren’s departure especially as her children support Warren as well. Wild expressed her frustration at the double standard laid down upon female lawmakers and their potential to run for president. “Well, who’s going to be the right woman? Look at us, we’re as diverse as you can get...So which one of us is the right woman?...That’s what makes me really frustrated. Because nobody ever says, well, ‘He’s not the right man.’”
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump took the news as an opportunity to attack Warren on Twitter while calling her a racial slur in the process. Trump tweeted that Warren dropping out was a few days too late, even mentioning Bloomberg in the attack as well. “Elizabeth “Pocahontas” Warren, who was going nowhere except into Mini Mike’s head, just dropped out of the Democrat primary...THREE DAYS TOO LATE. She cost Crazy Bernie, Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Texas. Probably cost him the nomination! Came in third in Mass,” tweeted Trump.
