‘Daredevil’ season 3 may be experiencing delays due to the start of production for another Netflix series, ‘The Defenders’. Meanwhile, director Kevin Smith revealed that he wanted to direct multiple episodes for the incoming season as well as take part in other Marvel TV projects.
According to Moviepilot, the third season for Netflix’ ‘Daredevil’ adaptation may have been delayed due to ‘The Defenders’ coming into the network. Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez left ‘Daredevil’ to sign on as showrunners for the latter.
Production for ‘The Daredevil’ was scheduled to begin sometime this year but the premiere date remains unconfirmed. Charlie Cox, who plays crime-fighting blind lawyer Matt Murdock a.k.a. Daredevil, is set to crossover to the new television show as he is part of the main cast. With the lead actor and showrunners leaving for the other project, the ‘Daredevil’ standalone series may have to be put on hold due to conflicting schedules and time constraints.
Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said, “I think ideally there will be a rhythm of about every six months you’ll get a new season or a new series from ‘The Defenders’ group. And then they’ll crossover into a combined [Defenders] season.”
Meanwhile, Smith expressed his enthusiasm over possibly getting the chance to finally direct episodes for ‘Daredevil’. He recently directed an episode for DC’s ‘The Flash’ and is set to direct another on the series on August.
During an interview with IGN, he said, "I feel very at home in that Flash world, so much so that I'd love to do the others. I even told [Marvel chief creative officer] Joe Quesada - we worked on Daredevil together back in the day, I wrote it, he drew it - I said, 'Dude, I want to direct Daredevil, man. That'd be wild to be able to do it in real-life - let's co-direct it, that'd be cool, just like we did the book. We could co-direct an episode and then, like, take the passion from the page to the screen.'”
He added, "I'm going to try and make that Daredevil thing happen. Every time I talk to Quesada or [Executive Vice President of Marvel Television] Jeph Loeb, I'm like, 'Hey! When are you going back down to the cameras?'"
Smith admitted that he was also open to working on other Marvel television projects, "You know, they're gearing up now for The Defenders… If I can get a piece of that Defenders mini-series holy s**t, could you imagine, dude? Because then you're working with multiple suits at once, that'd be phenomenal.”
The 45-year old filmmaker is well known for his work on several cult favorites including 1994’s ‘Clerks’, 1995’s ‘Mall Rats’, 1997’s ‘Chasing Amy’ and 1999’s ‘Dogma’. He also created the characters Jay and Silent Bob, who frequent his films. His friend and co-star Jason Mewes plays Jay while he plays Silent Bob.
His films are often loaded with pop culture and comic book references and share a connected universe called ‘View Askewniverse’, named after his production company View Askew Productions.
‘Daredevil’ is an American web television series based on the Marvel comic book character of the same name. It shares a continuity with other projects in the franchise and is the first in a series of shows that will lead up to a ‘Defenders’ crossover miniseries. It was created by Drew Goddard and produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios.
