‘Black Mirror’ season 3’s episode 4, entitled “San Junipero,” is speculated to receive a sequel. Director Owen Harris revealed the possibility during a recent interview. Meanwhile, the latest promotion for the series is targeting ad block users.
According to the Irish Examiner, one of the most popular episodes from season 3 may get a sequel. It was speculated that the follow-up would explore the company that provides the virtual reality system for its patrons.
Season 3’s episode 4, entitled “San Junipero,” was directed by Owen Harris and written by the series’ creator Charlie Brooker. It starred Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Mackenzie Davis as the star-crossed lesbian lovers Kelly and Yorkie, respectively. According to the Daily Beast, Brooker was inspired by the concept of nostalgia therapy and also wanted to do a period piece for the series.
Brooker revealed, “In my initial thinking of the story it was a heterosexual couple, and then for this season I was keen to not always default to a guy… Because I’m a bloke, quite often when I’m picturing a scenario there will be a bloke in the middle of it, so I thought, ‘What if it wasn’t?’ It immediately became a much deeper story because they get married in 1987, which wasn’t possible then.”
The episode received critical praise from fans and critics alike for its storyline, performances, script, and uplifting ending. Brooker said, “I’ve been really gratified by the response to it… People are crying all the food out of their bodies, which is perfect, and what I really like is it seems to be resonating with people across the board—regardless of their orientation. People are seeing that it’s a love story about two humans.” He even considered penning more positive future episodes in the series.
Episode 4’s director Owen Harris admitted during a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter that a sequel was possible but would depend on Brooker. When asked about a sequel, he replied, “It’d be nice wouldn’t it? It’d be fun to do a San Junipero sequel. But you have to remember that if there is a sequel, Charlie Brooker will be writing it. He’ll go all Black Mirror on it and he might not want to do two happy endings!”
Meanwhile, a new promotional stint for the Netflix series is targeting ad blocker users. The stint was created by Netflix and its agency MullenLowe Mediahub. When people with adblockers installed visit certain websites, they will see a banner with the message, “Hello ad blocker user. You cannot see the ad. But the ad can see you”.
‘Black Mirror’ is a science-fiction and satire television anthology series that originally aired on Channel 4 before being acquired by Netflix for season 3. Season 3 was released worldwide on October 21, 2016.
