The sequels to the famed “Avatar” film have been in the works for a long time and the current planned movies number in five. “Avatar 2” is expected to come out in 2020, but this is already quite a long gap between the first film. In order to make sure that viewers will have no trouble coping, it would appear that the films will be standalone properties. It would also seem that they are influenced by the tech used in “Alita: Battle Angel.”

As CinemaBlend reports, the films’ producer, Jon Landau recently provided insights into how progress was going with “Avatar 2” and what viewers can expect. Basically, the stories of the films will be self-contained. This means that moviegoers would not have needed to see the first film in order to understand what was going on in the sequels.

“Each movie is a standalone movie that we would wanna go see. You don’t need to have seen the first Avatar to see Avatar 2. It sits there and we’re gonna take people on a visual and an emotional journey that comes to its own conclusion. Okay, step back. Is that a movie we would wanna make just as a standalone story? Yes. Now we do the same thing on Movie 3, Movie 4, and Movie 5. What we have the luxury of on Avatar is the world of Pandora. We get to keep it there but everything can be new, we’re not treading new ground,” the producer said.

Speaking of “Avatar 2” and the other sequel films, the tech used on them for motion capture was refined and developed with the making of “Alita: Battle Angel.” The folks responsible for such magical special effects are those in Weta Digital. Now that the sci-fi battle film is done, the company’s focus is now on the “Avatar” films.
