7-Eleven Japan has delighted Studio Ghibli fans with its latest autumn offering, a croque madame affectionately dubbed “Laputa Bread.” This fried-egg-topped sandwich has become an instant favorite among anime lovers, capturing the essence of both Ghibli’s food scenes and Japan’s seasonal tsukimi tradition.
7-Eleven Japan Introduces “Laputa Bread,” A Ghibli-Inspired Twist on the Traditional Croque Madame
One of Studio Ghibli's most beloved food inspirations has appeared in Japan, albeit under a different name at 7-Eleven.
Japan is amid a culinary fascination with eggs, a trend that aligns with the autumn tradition of moon-viewing, or tsukimi. The rich, golden hue of egg yolks, reminiscent of a full harvest moon, is a critical feature in various seasonal foods such as tsukimi hamburgers, fried chicken sandwiches, and pizzas. Now, 7-Eleven has added another delightful tsukimi treat to the mix: a moon-viewing version of its croque monsieur. Now adorned with a fried egg, this open-faced ham and cheese sandwich is a perfect way to celebrate the season and immerse yourself in Japanese culture.
Interestingly, despite the traditional symbols of moon-viewing—rabbits and pampas grass—on the packaging, 7-Eleven refrains from calling it a tsunami croque monsieur. Instead, the official name for a croque monsieur with an egg on top is croque madame. But many fans aren't calling it that, either. Instead, they're excitedly referring to it as "Laputa Bread," after the dish prepared by Pazu for Sheeta in Studio Ghibli's Laputa: Castle in the Sky.

For those eager to savor this Ghibli-inspired snack, it’s best to act swiftly—just be careful not to drop it on your Totoro marshmallow socks.
