Professor, Computer Networking and Telecommunications, University of Salford
I am an electronic engineer by profession but specialise in the area of telecommunciations. My research interests include computer network design and performance, protocols, location and context based services, the delivery of multimedia including ultra high definition television and the application of networking to sensing and monitoring such as domestic energy use. I also have a keen interest in the history and evolution of telecommunications technology and am regularly invited to deliver public lectures on this subject.
I recently completed the 2013 Institute of Telecommunications Professionals (ITP) national series of Family Christmas Presentations with a lecture entitled, "Your world in your hand" that explored the development of the mobile phone over its 40 years history, and my book with Andy Sutton, 30 Years of Mobile Phones in the UK, explores the history of the UK mobile telecoms industry and many iconic handsets.
