Baranov and Timashev Chair in Data Analytics and Professor of Political Science, The Ohio State University
Bear F. Braumoeller is Professor in the Department of Political Science at The Ohio State University and the holder of the Baronov and Timashev Chair in Data Analytics. He conducts research in the areas of international relations, political methodology, and complexity and human behavior. He received his B.A. from the University of Chicago and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, and he held faculty positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Harvard University before moving to Ohio State.
Professor Braumoeller’s research is in the areas of international relations, especially international security and international order, and statistical methodology. His first book, The Great Powers and the International System (Cambridge University Press) won the International Studies Association Best Book Award for 2014 as well as the 2014 J. David Singer Book Award. His most recent book, Only the Dead: The Persistence of War in the Modern Age (Oxford University Press) challenges the decline-of-war thesis propounded by scholars like Steven Pinker.
Professor Braumoeller currently co-directs the Computational Social Science community of practice under the Translational Data Analytics Institute at Ohio State.
