Windows 10 1903 Update: 5 New Features, Improvements That Make It Worth Installing

Microsoft has started to roll out the Windows 10 1903 update, also known as the May 2019 update, on PCs running with the operating system. It is one of the two major updates arriving this year so it is packed with a number of new features and improvements worth installing.

Windows Sandbox

This is one of the most anticipated features arriving with the Windows 10 1903 update after being announced back in late 2018. It allows users to have a secondary desktop where they could run programs not familiar to them. When someone wants to try out a potentially harmful .exe file, they can set up a new desktop environment.

The sandbox can be completely deleted after the app trial, thus, avoiding making permanent damage to the actual desktop environment. This feature is part of the Windows 10 1903 update but is only available on Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise editions.

Search and Cortana

It appears that many users prefer the old-fashioned way of searching files on their computer by using the Search option from the taskbar. At some point, Microsoft paired this with its digital assistant Cortana that mixes text searches with voice-activated searches. Luckily, these two features will be separated upon installing Windows 10 1903 update.

Light Theme

One display-related feature anticipated in Windows 10 1903 update is a new light theme option. People who have been using Windows 10 are practically using a dark mode option on the operating system. Now, there will be an option to switch it up for a brighter view.

Windows Update Control

Windows 10 1903 update also offers more user controls when it comes to the deployment of system updates. Users will now be able to customize when the installation of an update will be initiated so as not to disrupt ongoing operations or to avoid further issues if a computer does not have enough storage to accommodate the update.

Reserved Storage

Windows 10 1903 update introduces the Reserved Storage feature that, as its name dictates, allows the system to set aside 7GB for future updates and other temporary files. However, this feature is only available upon performing a clean install of the May 2019 update as well as on future PCs that will come with pre-installed 1903.

Microsoft is slowly rolling out Windows 10 1903 update on compatible PCs. Users are advised to keep checking on the Windows Update menu in the Settings app to see if the May 2019 update is available on their computer.
