Vladimir Putin and his government have repeatedly denied their involvement in the infiltration of the National Rifle Association (NRA) but a U.S. intelligence report showed otherwise. It was said that the Kremlins are directly involved and there are evidence that they backed up the intrusion plot of the American non-profit organization that advocates for gun rights.
According to The Daily Beast, Alexander Torshin, the Russian central bank official who courted the NRA leaders for years, reportedly informed the Kremlin about his efforts and asked them if they could back him up by participating. The publication stated that this event was not reported and its contents were kept a secret.
It was added that Maria Butina, Torshin’s apprentice, was also working to infiltrate the NRA and the Kremlins supported her actions of trying to woo the U.S.’ riffle association. With this, the federal prosecutors declared that Butina had acted on behalf of the Russian Federation, however, the senior Russian government officials were said to have distanced themselves from her task of courting the NRA.
“My assessment of what was happening with Torshin and Butina and the NRA was that the Russians decided, a good period of time before 2016, to run an influence operation here in the U.S. with a couple of different goals,” The Daily Beast quoted former US CIA chief who supervised Russian operations, Steve Hall as saying. “The obvious goal was the one the intelligence community assessed back in 2016, which was to help Donald Trump win and increase the likelihood that Hillary Clinton would lose. In addition, they wanted to create as much chaos in our democracy as possible.”
Prior to this investigative research, The McClatchy DC reported that elite Russia and NRA officials have met during the 2016 campaign. When this came to light, lots of evidence had surfaced about the NRA’s connection to Russia and Robert Mueller started investigating if the National Rifle Association was indeed made into a channel where the Russians passed money to help Donald Trump win in the 2016 presidential election.
“Several prominent Russians, some in President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle or high in the Russian Orthodox Church, now have been identified as having contact with National Rifle Association officials during the 2016 U.S. election campaign, according to photographs and an NRA source,” the writers of the article, Peter Stone and Greg Gordon wrote.
Meanwhile, the investigation on this issue is ongoing and the truth about Vladimir Putin’s hands on the NRA infiltration is expected to be revealed. On the other hand, Donald Trump has been placed in a difficult position after his former lawyer, Michael Cohen is set to testify against him next month.
