U.S. Navy Vice Admiral Shoshana Chatfield, a top NATO representative and one of the Navy’s few female three-star officers, has been dismissed, according to sources cited by Reuters. Though the Pentagon has not officially confirmed the removal, NATO allies were reportedly informed of her departure.
Chatfield served as the U.S. military representative to the NATO Military Committee and was the first woman to lead the Naval War College, a position she held until 2023. Her firing follows the recent removal of General Timothy Haugh, head of the NSA and U.S. Cyber Command, and Navy Chief Admiral Lisa Franchetti. These actions are fueling concerns over a widening national security purge under President Donald Trump’s administration.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, during his first visit to NATO in February, criticized European allies for relying too heavily on U.S. defense support. Hegseth has also prioritized the elimination of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in the military, arguing they undermine unity. This crackdown may be linked to Chatfield’s dismissal, sources suggest.
Senator Jack Reed condemned the firing as “disgraceful,” criticizing Republican silence and warning of the harm to national defense. Chatfield, a decorated helicopter pilot, recently spoke of gender biases in the military and expressed hope for a future where qualifications, not gender, define service.
The Trump administration’s moves have raised alarms among former officials, who fear military leaders are being targeted for perceived disloyalty or past ties to the Biden administration. Critics argue that such purges erode military independence and weaken constitutional loyalty, replacing it with political favoritism.
As military leadership sees rapid turnover, concerns grow over the impact on NATO relations, national security, and internal cohesion within the U.S. Armed Forces.
