Volkswagen (VW) has partnered with Energy Web blockchain for a smart charging solution that maximizes the use of renewable energy.
According to Jesse Morris, CEO of Energy Web, the project is meant to showcase that advanced EV charging solutions can empower EV owners to set their preferences for when and where they get their energy.
As an example, Morris said that EV owners can select to charge using wind and solar resources, from energy assets within a 10 km radius, and target 80 percent charge by 5 pm.
Energy Web’s matching algorithm makes this possible.
The Proof of Concept solution was tested for three months with VW's electric SUV ID4. The Elli electric charging app from VW was integrated with Energy Web's solution. VW is looking into adding more functions to scale it up for production.
To investigate applications for electric vehicle charging, Energy Web and VW first collaborated in March 2021.
BMW and the blockchain initiative are collaborating to charge vehicles using sustainable energy. That was a component of Energy Web's Open Charging Network, which functions similarly to roaming on mobile phones in that you sometimes use the operator with whom you have an account while other times you use the network of another mobile provider.
