Kyiv Hit by Russian Missile Attack as Fires Erupt Across Multiple Districts

Russia launched an early morning attack on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, on Sunday, with ballistic missiles triggering explosions and fires in several parts of the city, according to Ukrainian officials.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said falling debris from intercepted missiles sparked fires in at least three districts. One of the most significant incidents occurred in a multi-story residential building in the city center, where flames engulfed the seventh and eighth floors.

Ukraine's air force initially warned that Russian forces had launched ballistic missiles toward the capital, prompting air raid alerts across Kyiv. However, the warning was lifted after approximately 50 minutes, and the military later withdrew its missile deployment alert.

Residents reported hearing multiple explosions as air defense systems responded to the attack. Images and videos shared through unofficial online channels showed fires burning in different areas of the capital, highlighting the impact of the overnight strike.

Despite the damage, authorities said there were no immediate reports of injuries or fatalities. Emergency crews were dispatched to affected locations to extinguish fires and assess the extent of the destruction.

The latest assault comes just days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy warned that Russia was likely preparing a fresh wave of attacks. Speaking on Friday, Zelenskiy cautioned that intensified strikes could occur within the following 48 hours, urging citizens to remain vigilant.

Kyiv has remained a frequent target of Russian missile and drone attacks throughout the war, with Ukraine relying heavily on its air defense network to intercept incoming threats. Even when missiles are destroyed before reaching their targets, falling debris often causes damage to homes, infrastructure, and public buildings.

The renewed strike underscores the continuing security risks facing Ukraine's capital as the conflict enters another phase of sustained aerial attacks. Ukrainian authorities continue to monitor the situation while emergency responders work to contain fires and secure impacted neighborhoods.
