BEAVERTON, Ore., June 11, 2017 -- Unity Chiropractic and Wellness Center has released the news that its Beaverton chiropractor, Dr. Kathy Cantwell, is a Certified SOT Practitioner. SOT, or Sacro-Occipital Technique, is a chiropractic technique that helps repair problems with the TMJ, or temporomandibular (jaw) joint and related structures. Pain in this joint is often resistant to standard treatment, so alternatives of this sort are in high demand.
Dentists who are treating patients with TMJ disorders need to look at a wide variety of options to end their pain. Often, the pain from a TMJ problem is so powerful that even strong drugs don't completely eliminate it. Drugs of this type are also highly addictive, and because of this, they are becoming a "last resort" option. That leaves both dentists and their patients looking for other, safer, alternatives.
This is where SOT practitioners like Dr. Kathy Cantwell of Unity Chiropractic and Wellness Center come in. The Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT) is an advanced chiropractic method that, among other things, can be used to help correct the alignment and tension present in the jaw joint and nearby areas. It is especially effective for TMJ pain because such pain typically results directly from misalignments or improper muscle tension. The massive forces of chewing and repetitive motions of the jaw magnify the harmful effects of any misalignment until the pain becomes unbearable. Correcting the misalignment will stop the damage and allow healing to take place.
"SOT is a technique that can be used to correct physical issues all over the body, but I have chosen to focus on problems that involve the head. I work with dentists, orthodontists, and neuromuscular dentists to treat TMJ and related disorders. SOT is especially good for these because it doesn't just deal with the alignment of the cervical spine, but also helps to balance a part of the brain that controls rhythmic muscle movements. This helps to combat TMJ problems resulting from alignment issues, muscle tension, or both," said Dr. Cantwell.
Mastering SOT requires specialized training that goes above that given to general chiropractors. Once this training is obtained, practitioners are eligible for certification. Dr. Cantwell has this certification, showing that she is qualified to perform the special techniques involved in this method.
Dr. Cantwell also performs other cranial adjustments as well as diversified full-spine adjustments. She has experience treating sports injuries, too.
