The UN World Food Program (WFP) has raised alarm after the US administration abruptly ended emergency food assistance funding for 14 countries. As the world’s largest provider of food aid, the WFP warns that the cuts could leave millions suffering from severe hunger and starvation in crisis-affected regions.
The agency is urgently seeking clarification from US officials and advocating for the reinstatement of support. Despite the setback, the WFP emphasized its continued appreciation for US contributions and those of its global donors. WFP teams are working tirelessly to deliver food aid to vulnerable populations in conflict-ridden and impoverished areas around the world.
The funding halt follows a report by the Associated Press, which revealed that the Trump administration has terminated remaining US aid to the WFP and several humanitarian organizations. The report cites internal documents and confirmations from two US officials, a UN representative, and other sources. Major operations in countries such as Afghanistan, Syria, and Yemen—already on the brink of famine—are among those impacted by the cuts.
The WFP reportedly suffered some of the most significant losses in this unexpected decision, which threatens to unravel critical food relief programs. With global hunger levels at an all-time high due to conflict, climate shocks, and economic instability, the loss of US support could be catastrophic.
As the WFP navigates this funding crisis, it continues to call for global solidarity to prevent further humanitarian disaster. The organization remains committed to its mission of fighting hunger worldwide and is urging the international community to step in and fill the funding gap. The future of millions now depends on swift and coordinated action.
